Engaging Adolescents in Health Research
The California Adolescent Health Collaborative (CAHC) from 2016 to 2018 launched an innovative program in Merced County and Alameda County, Partnering with Adolescents to Ready the Newest Engaged Researchers (PARTNER). Collaborating with Livingston Community Health and Asian Health Services, CAHC established diverse advisory boards. These teams included adolescent patients and health professionals, converging on a mission to advance patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and clinical effectiveness research (CER). Young participants were trained as co-researchers, fostering cross-site collaboration and community-specific research priorities identification, a narrative captured in Livingston Community Health’s Digital Story.
Merced County's Chapter: Cultivating Young Researchers
In the farming community of Livingston, CA, teenagers were key voices in determining the health topics that mattered most to their generation. Funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the PARTNER program amplified the adolescent perspective in healthcare research, reshaping how findings and policies impact the youth within Central Valley's communities.
Fostering Advocacy Skills through Tobacco Control Programs
With support from the Alameda County Public Health Department's Tobacco Control Program, the CAHC took a proactive stance against youth-targeted tobacco marketing. Through the Tobacco Control Policy Leadership Institute (TCPLI), adolescents became versed in advocacy, delivering over 11 powerful presentations to their peers and taking active roles in policy discussions at city councils in Oakland and San Leandro.
Alameda County's Awareness Campaigns
Under the banner "Good Taste, Bad Taste: Addressing Tobacco in Our Community," young leaders were armed with eloquent arguments and well-crafted presentations to challenge the pervasive influence of the tobacco industry in their communities.
Addressing Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Relationships
In another drive for adolescent health, CAHC targeted the serious issue of commercially sexually exploited children (CSEC). Partnering with influential figures like Dr. Aisha Mays and organizations like MISSSEY, CAHC contributed to the development of a training curriculum that bolstered sexual and reproductive health education for CSEC through a trauma-informed approach, backed by The Lalor Foundation.
Stanislaus County's Strides Toward Healthier Relationships
CAHC's Healthy Haven initiative, funded by the Blue Shield of California Foundation, worked to impart knowledge and intervention strategies around adolescent relationship abuse (ARA) within Stanislaus County. Equipped to foster healthy relationships and connect peers to critical resources, youth took significant steps toward fostering safer community environments.
Collaborative Efforts in Sexual Health Advocacy
In its foundational phase, CAHC took the administrative helm of the Adolescent Sexual Health Work Group (ASHWG), collaborating with various organizations to enhance the sexual and reproductive health of California's youth. ASHWG’s longevity and ongoing collaboration reinforce CAHC's dedication to becoming a beacon of support for adolescent health advocacy.
Tools & Resources: Bridging the Knowledge Gap
Contributions like the "Core Competencies for Providers of Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs/Services" are a testament to CAHC's engagement with ASHWG, providing valuable frameworks that continue to guide providers across the state.
Traveling with Purpose: Impact Goes Beyond Borders
As participants travel from their hometowns to collaborative meetings or advocacy events, their journeys echo the CAHC’s commitment to adolescent well-being. Each destination serves not only as a site of critical learning and sharing but also reflects the growing network of informed, empowered youth. Families and participants who find temporary respite in comfortable accommodations near these hubs of change become part of a larger narrative—one that weaves together travel, transformation, and the tireless pursuit of a healthier, informed generation.
